Education Should Be An Experience!

I pride myself on being innovative and tailoring teaching to the needs and interests of my students. An ability to relate the material to one's life and take ownership over your learning is the core of my teaching philosophy; therefore, I teach in a manner that best enable my student(s) to maximize this goal. Learning should be an experience, and I strive to develop activities and approaches to make this experience a pleasant and engaging one. My classes are fun. The activities are not wastes of time, and the end result is measurable growth in the subject area. My best quality is my ability to adapt and think on the fly. This means that I can address concerns and issues as they manifest; also, it means that I am not locked into one way of doing something. This means that on a given day, I can adjust the manner and method of instruction to suit the needs and interest of my stud ... read more

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have a Masters in Poetry from the University of Michigan, where I was awarded a Zell Postgraduate Fellowship and was a semi-finalist for the Thoerdore Roethke Hopwood Award. My collection of poems, Point of Sand, was awarded the Michigan Writers Chapbook Award in 2009. In addition to spending my summers on the Creative Writing Faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts where I teach high school poetry majors, I currently teach in the English department at the University of Michigan.

I received my Masters in Poetry from the University of Michigan in 2011, where I was awarded a Zell Postgraduate Fellowship, and where I currently teach in the English Department. This will be my 6th summer on the Creative Writing Faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, where I world primarily with high school poetry majors. I have a chapbook (Michigan Writers Associated Press. 2009), and have publications in journals such as The Dunes Review and The Smoking Poet.
I had a wonderful teacher once who quoted a line from a Richard Brautigan book that went, "My teachers could easily have ridden with Jessie James for all the time they stole from me." He told us about making a promise to himself, when he began teaching, that he would never be the sort of teacher a student could say this about. I made the same promise when I began teaching. I have been blessed with some tremen ... read more

I believe strongly in providing children an opportunity to learn material in a way that will resonate with them personally. Throughout my education leading to a dual Master's Degree I have been able to learn a wealth of information about tailoring information to meet individual learning styles. I have experience in a variety of subject areas such as: math, statistics, reading, writing, social sciences (psychology, sociology, political science). Additionally, I have provided private lessons for multiple students that play brass instruments.
I love working with all children, and all age groups. I am here to help find a unique way to present the material to your child to help them understand it in language that they can understand. I am patient, easy going and considerate. My overall goal is to help young students realize their potential, and instill a love of learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

Curiosity is an important aspect of both teaching and learning. Curiosity tends to accompany a willingness to learn. It also brings up questions, such as “Why?” or “How?” or “What does this mean for me?” As a tutor, I try to bring out a student’s curiosity by focusing on him or her as a person and by finding out what his or her goals and interests are. I aim to show students how reading and writing are necessary to accomplish those goals and interests.
My tutoring/teaching experience has been primarily with high school and college students. As an Advanced Placement English student in high school, I volunteered time at the school’s writing center; as an English tutor in college, I also helped students with parts of speech, sentence and paragraph structure, and grammar. I love being able to share my passion for and knowledge of writing. For the past three years, I have been the o ... read more

I love teaching students of all ages and I recognize that most students do not get the help they need during the school day, which is why it is important for them to get the help they need outside of class. Each student learns differently and it is important for me to figure out a way that works best for him or her so that I can instill the techniques that will help them throughout their entire educational career. I find that many students get frustrated when they don’t understand and if I take the time to help them at their own pace in a teaching style that works best for them school becomes less stressful. I feel that once students feel confident in the classroom they can enjoy learning and that’s what I hope to give my students.

I believe that the purpose of education, in any field, is to train the mind to think. With this goal, I approach tutoring with a desire to understand where each student is coming from and to help them figure out how to make their studies more interesting and applicable to life. Sometimes only personal attention is needed to truly reach a student, sometimes differant ways of practice, or ways of considereing the work need to be learned. In any situation, I am committed to helping each student to grow as a person and then as an academic.
As a graduate of Hillsdale College, I have been ingrained with a need for education to be applicable to the specific student and to widen his or her ability to observe, analyze, and draw conclusions. Majoring in English, I greatly appreciate the ability and discipline of language - vocablary, grammar, and syntax - to focus the mind and to aid communi ... read more
