A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from NSU with a BS in Chemistry as well as minors in Biology and Math. I have very good writing skills not only because of writing lab reports but I worked for the university in the community relations office. I helped write many letters and plans detailing events we had. I have tutored fellow college students in math and science for the past 4 years.
What makes me a great teacher is that I have patience and the understanding to work with anyone. I explain things in a way that whomever I am tutoring can relate to and benefit from the most. I am very social and outgoing which I think is important in helping identifying a student's specific learning needs. I enjoy helping others and want to use my abilities in a positive way.

Music, mathematics and science are the loves of my life... and they're all three related. I played reed instruments (clarinet and saxophones) professionally in New Orleans in the late 1970s before returning to graduate school to study chemical physics. I am personal friends with well-known professional musicians and scientists. I taught my children to play reed instruments (clarinet and saxophones). As of November, 2009 I am certified in Oklahoma to teach advanced mathematics (grades 6-12), intermediate mathematics (6-12), mathematics for high school credit (grades 5-8) and physical science (6-12). I taught math, chemistry and physics at the university level for 25 years.

I enjoy teaching, conversely I also have enjoyed my experiences tutoring to date. Working one on one is what some children (and adults) require if only from time to time to "get through" something they are struggling with academically. Over time I have become more and more patient, and have worked with people from a wide range of backgrounds and believe that if a person wants to succeed then they are more than halfway to their destination. I have also seen that if you can influence this and help kids "want" that success, it can happen as well.
Presently I hold a certificate for Physics and chemistry and I'm planning on Certifying in Math (Algebra and geometry) here in Oklahoma. I am very adaptive to students learning style. I usually spend the first ten minutes of our first meeting figuring out what the student is struggling with and how to best meet their needs. I try to teach students more how to think analytical more so then just solving problems because it is more beneficial to the student. I feel that if I can teach the student how to read theorems, understand concepts, then problems just become easy at that point.
I started tutoring part time in 2004 and have continued this throughout college. I worked as a math tutor for tulsa community college part time during the summer. I have earned over 190 hours of college credit, I have two degrees, and I am only 15 hours away from a chemical engineering degree.
