Experience Summary
My education, work and volunteer experience, I believe, make me a qualified, reliable educator. I have a PhD in chemistry and an additional five years research and teaching experience within Universities in Upstate NY. In addition, over the past thirteen years of my career, I have taught groups, and tutored individually, a variety of different levels of science and chemistry education, ranging from high school science to the highest degree level chemistry, masters degree and PhD students.
My drive for science education stems from my enthusiasm for science. I love challenging many students’ expectations that science is a difficult and “boring” subject by coming up with new ideas to help make it accessible, relevant and exciting. I also strongly believe in nurturing curiosity and helping children, to learn from engaging in independent thinking. My philosophy of learning is a transformation process akin to athletic training and I believe students should be empowered to take responsibility for part of their “training” since knowledge of the facts alone taught by an educator will not make a scientific mind. Therefore, part of my teaching style is to strongly encourage students to engage in asking “why?” rather than just accept facts, as I believe this is a springboard to foster independent learning.
Finally, my deep-rooted passions in life are focused on working with people from all walks of life and helping to make a deep impact in their lives through education. I have always valued the ethos and power of education. As a student, I was always encouraged by other people to seize learning opportunities presented to me. I now feel privileged to be in a position where I am able share my knowledge to the upcoming leaders of this next generation.
