Experience Summary
During my final year at USC, I tutored several students on a one-on-one basis in financial accounting and statistics. The tutoring sessions lasted between one and two hours and continued over several months. My BS degree included a business core with coursework in finance, statistics and economics. I completed three economics courses as a part of my undergraduate degree including micro, macro and advanced micro. I performed strongly in each of these courses and helped several other students prepare for the advanced micro final exam on which I earned one of the highest grades in the class. I took advanced micro my junior year of college and still feel comfortable with the concepts (I just graduated this month). Added pressure to perform well in these courses came from my mother who as an experienced economist would have given me a lot of grief for poor grades in her favorite subject! I am scheduled to begin a MS degree in taxation at the University of Miami in 2011. I scored a 1530/1600 on the SAT and 650/800 on the GMAT.
Teaching Style
Many professors and teachers distribute practice materials that look very similar to future tests and quizzes. I think it is important to prepare almost exclusively with these materials in order for students to be comfortable with the question format and style. If students are unfamiliar with the format of a test, they are likely to make mistakes even if they have the necessary skills to perform well. I can make students laugh and use examples that are relevant to their lives. However, I refuse to waste any time in unrelated conversation.
