My comments on tutoring Dyslexia: I am a special education teacher and have worked with a couple students with Dyslexia.

From my experience, I have realized that students learn faster and retain the information they learned longer if a tactile, hands-on approach is used. Currently, I teach K-5 students, and no matter what I'm teaching, I try to turn it into an educational game where the students are up and moving and having fun while learning. Each one exceeded my expectations and learned far more than anyone could have imagined. I truly believe in finding the style of learning that suits each student, and pursuing that particular route. And I have found that you can include each learning style by using a tactile approach. It is extremely simple to add in visual and auditory components within hands-on activities. I love finding new ideas and fun ways to teach each subject! My classroom experience with Special Education started while in college at Illinois State University, where I gained very valuabl ... read more

Hello! My name is Payton and I am currently a student at Illinois State University. I am studying to get my bachelors in Special Education - Learning and Behavior Specialist. I am currently a junior and will be graduating in Spring of 2024. Once I graduate, I will be certified to teach k-12 grade Special Education. I currently have my Associate in Arts from College of DuPage as well. I have worked with children of all ages throughout my high school and college career. When studying at College of DuPage, I had many opportunities to observe and student teach within Middle School Special Education classrooms, specifically English. I loved it! When I'm home for the summer I am a head teacher at a daycare facility for an Elementary Summer STEAM camp. I am in charge of planning lessons and activities for my students. I am very comfortable working with students of all ages and those with disabi

My teaching style is fun yet innovative. I incorporate all types of teaching styles to meet the needs of learners. I love to learn and demonstrate that through my teaching style. My students have fun in my classroom. I aim to entertain in an effort to make students feel comfortable and have fun themselves. I have served as the 6th grade lead teacher at Rolling Acres Edison. I teach full inclusion science and social studies by integrating math and reading skills. I am responsible for leading daily team meetings concerning student data. Together we use monthly online diagnostic testing to ensure student success on state mandated tests. As a team leader, I meet bi-weekly with our school's leadership team. I developed and implemented an RTI model used by the 5th and 6th grade teams at Rolling Acres in an effort to increase reading benchmark scores of struggling readers. I also co

I graduated from the University of Iowa on May 15, 2010 with a BA in Elementary Education and a reading endorsement. Apart from my area of specialization, reading, I also took seven science courses at the University of Iowa, mainly in chemistry. My volunteer experiences have shaped the person who I am today, as I have completed over one hundred hours of volunteer work in schools and hospitals. Approximately thirty of those hours were spent one-on-one with first graders, helping them on math and reading skills and strategies. Furthermore, I completed my student teaching experience in a 5th grade classroom, in which I taught math, reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and science. My teaching philosophy is to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for my students, in which they feel equal and confident as learners. Creating a positive learning environment begins with build

I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process. I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. Throughout those years I've encountered many special needs students and many bright students, tutoring in subjects ranging from English, Math, Social Studies, to Computer Science.
