I enjoy tutoring because I find it rewarding to build relationships with students and observe their progress. I recognize that it is crucial to build rapport with students in order to gain their trust and respect, and as a result, I try to discover my students’ goals and interests. Once a student realizes that I genuinely care about her success, she is more likely to work hard and obey my instructions. In addition, I am a patient individual, which is a useful quality to have when one is having difficulty getting a student to comprehend a particular concept. I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I have been in the field of education for approximately 14 years of which the last 8 years have been special education. I have worked with students of all ages, on all skill levels and many with learning disabilities through 8th grade.
