While I draw much of my knowledge from my university education in physics and mathematics, the majority of my teaching experience is drawn from the world of corporate retail management. I have trained employees of all ages and backgrounds in both store operations and product facts. I possess good communication skills, both spoken and written, that have been sharpened through collaborative work in physics and individual work in sales.
Every person has a unique background and set of experiences that he or she brings to the learning experience. It is difficult, at best, for the student to correctly assess how his or her experiences affect the learning process. Me teaching style is similar to my leadership style, democratic. I like to have students explain what they are thinking when approaching a problem. This way, it is possible to determine where the breakdown may be. Examples, definitions, and sometimes taking a step back can make a significant difference when attempting to move forward. A strong base is vital.
My passion is sharing my knowledge with others. I studied at Kent State in Kent, Ohio. While at Kent I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, and a minor in English with extensive course work in business. It was in my senior year at UConn that I learned about a program called City Year that enables young people as myself to work within the realm of urban education. As a City Year corps member, I was able to work both inside the classroom and after school with a group of 22 ninth grade boys at Glenville High School in Cleveland. Not only was I able to do in-class tutoring with these adolescents, but I was also able to to mentor them by encouraging them to do the right thing. Being so close in age to my students, I was further able to bridge the communication gap between these boys and their teachers.
