I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I am a former mathematics teacher who is interested in returning to the profession. Recently, I finished a "refresher" graduate-level course at UNR, and am independently reading an assortment of literature from NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and others. Having worked with students of all ages in a variety of settings, I specialize in teaching science and math concepts as well as test prep and study skills. I am a valedictorian candidate, graduating with a degree in English. My background in English is both technical, focusing on classics in British and early American literature, while my position as editor of the Sierra Nevada Review, an annual publication of poetry, affords me a creative grasp of writing. Upon matriculation at Colby, I enrolled in organic chemistry and decided to major in chemistry. I continued my studies in chemistry and additional areas of interest, including math, government, and economics. Before graduating I participated in an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates at UC Riverside. With the guidance of my primary investigator and a grad student, I gained experience doing research into the fabrication of nano-structures (in this case, reusable and gas-specific sensing devices, or an "e-nose").
