I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I've also had my own SAT tutor and seen different programs and their styles, and I've chosen the one that I find the most effective.

Versatile Hands-on Tutor for all Age ranges

I prefer hands on teaching, but I like to remain flexible to the individuals learning style. Depending on the topics covered, we read, write, and do hands-on activities to keep the brain stimulated. Sometimes if applicable, and with parental consent, we would do art projects and maybe watch an educational film (that the parent has approved of course). For sciences and social studies I really like the idea of field trips, but everything will be permitted by the parental figures first. These field trips usually include going to parks and observing natural habitats, or even visiting the local museums. We can usually negotiate a small group trip which makes the costs slim to none to have these extra curricular activities.

A Little Bit About Me...

Mathematics is a field that extends beyond a series of procedures as it taught far too widely these days. My stress is on conceptual understanding, as it is the key to understanding the subject. Even moreso than the procedures that we have been accustomed to viewing as being the core of Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, conceputal underpinnings are what the make the subject meaningful.
I am a former mathematics teacher who is interested in returning to the profession. I have both tutored and taught the subject in the past, and have test scores that demonstrate my current proficiency. Recently, I finished a "refresher" graduate-level course at UNR, and am independently reading an assortment of literature from NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and others.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a valedictorian candidate, graduating with a degree in English. My background in English is both technical, focusing on classics in British and early American literature, while my position as editor of the Sierra Nevada Review, an annual publication of poetry, affords me a creative grasp of writing. I am also the assistant coordinator of the Sierra Nevada Tutoring Center. I begin a lesson by asking a student what he or she knows about the topic. If they have any familiarity with the topic I ask about it and confirm or correct their preconceptions. If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations. Pnemonics can be useful, but only if the underlying concepts are first taught.
