It takes two to tutor...and tango!

I am an English major at the University of South Carolina Beaufort in my final semester of study and will be graduating in December with a BA and a concentration in writing. Though I have never formally been a tutor, I have always been the person that my friends have gone to for help with composing papers, interpreting and analyzing passages of literature, and general study skills for how to improve their writing and/or reading abilities. I am a member of my university's varsity softball team, and I have helped a lot of my teammates on long bus rides to games delve into a passage of Shakespeare or see the beauty behind Wordsworth's lines. English, particularly writing, is something I am very passionate about, and I love being able to help others in any way that I can in that field.
I am quite flexible. I think every person learns differently and no singular method should be applied ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I recently graduated from Ohio University with a BS in English Education in March of 2010. My last day of student teaching, I received an offer to teach at a Career and Technical school for a long-term Language Arts position for ten weeks. I taught six different eleventh and twelfth grade classes with two preps. During my student teaching I taught twelfth grade with four different preps, including traditional, accelerated, AP, and creative writing English classes.
I believe the teaching world is so wonderful because the process of learning is never-ending, for the teacher and the student. Teachers and students gain information from each other and therefore make the learning process meaningful and relateable. I believe strongly that adapting lessons to students' lives is the best way for students to better understand and discover not only the lesson taught, but also their world. A w ... read more

I stumbled upon the joy of teaching as I helped others learn to dive recreationally in my early 20’s. When I began my real estate career, I worked primarily with first time home buyers, whom I educated constantly. With the housing market collapse my desire to instruct in this manner grew as I segued into the insurance industry, and was given an opportunity to open a branch office and personally train over 50 agents in a one on one capacity over the course of two years. I still currently educate a class of insurance agents every few weeks on the complexity of products available to individuals in the market, and how to sell them, while sharing a few life lessons along the way. I am happy to share my book of individual student evaluations.

I am a recently retired business executive who started his career as a school teacher. I taught English Language and Literature before embarking on a career in business. I do enjoy helping students with their problems. I have a technique of visualization. for example, which is the first example I use. I tell the student to think of a tree. in the seconds you think of a tree, you don't think of just the tree. you think of the roots, the trunk, the limbs, the branches, the leaves. then you think of whats going on in the tree, right down to the point of the tree taking in carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen and water. Why is the tree giving off water. most people do not know that the tree is making water because it is attaching hydrogen to the oxygen to get rid of the hydrogen, acid. I can apply this same visualization to almost anything.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that a teacher should teach because he or she possesses a quest for learning, a passion for a particular subject, and is driven by a true calling and desire to inspire young and diverse minds. I believe that the learning environment is crucial for students’ understanding and intellectual growth, and I believe that teachers must contribute to the development of students’ curiosity and creativity. Teachers must always be open to new and improved forms of instruction, and he or she must explore various ways to inspire students. A teacher must also incorporate culturally responsive teaching into his or her instruction so that all students are capable of receiving similar instruction that respects their differences.
