I enjoy one on one tutoring. It's what I'm use to doing at work. I've done group sessions before and am ok with them but I feel like students get more out of it if we do one on one. I've been doing private tutoring for about a year but have been training drafters at work for a couple of years now. I got started drafting for a Civil/ Construction company that specialized in tilt-up construction. I then moved on to an MEP firm that specialized in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, sprinkler and telecom. I've done some Audio/visual drafting as well but for the past 2.5 years have worked for a fire alarm company. I never thought I'd be a tutor but I ended up being the guy who trains new drafters at worked and it turns out that I liked it. I moved on to doing home tutoring from there and I enjoy doing it.

I begin by observing the person. In which areas are they confident and strong? In which areas are they fearful and using avoidance? I then find a bridge from their place of confidence to their place of fear and coax them across until they are happily skipping across. This may take some time, but I believe in quality over quantity when it comes to completed work. I want to leave the person with the ability to complete it well and on their own the next time. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas. I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). In tutoring math, the individual needs to have their homework present and, if available, old/recent tests so they may learn from the past as well as the present. Math adds unto itself, so understanding previous rules and equations are necessary for applying them to future classes. Once the basics are covered properly, seeing to the need for current classes will become much easier and enjoyable.
