I have taught Microsoft Excel in Computer Applications for two different colleges. I also personally use Microsoft Excel to keep an inventory of my reference library as well as maintaining a backup of the grades for the various classes I teach. An approach I use in my teaching is the I rarely will tell the student outright what to do to get the answer or just what the answer is.
