A Little Bit About Me...

I have my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from a private, Catholic university. My time there taught me to be not only determined in what I do, but also ethical. During my college years, I spent a year tutoring students in English and Psychology courses. I am open to working with any level of student in English/Reading/Grammar/Literature and with high school and college level Psychology students.
I believe that all children learn differently and that all children should be given a chance to learn in ways that suit them most. I believe in helping students achieve their personal best. I am dedicated to assisting students in achieving their academic goals and I try my hardest to be a good role model to every student I encounter.

Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I had the privilege of being employed as a special education teacher. In 2005, I resigned my teaching position to open my own licensed home daycare facility. During this time, I was the sole operator and administrator of Haneline Family Daycare. I am currently completing my master’s degree at Eastern Michigan University to obtain a K-12 endorsement as a reading specialist. As a teacher for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, I had the privilege of working with students, age 3 to 21, who had significant cognitive impairments, and occasionally other disabilities such as autism and physically impairments. I retired in June after 32 years. My experience with students involved instruction in all areas of development, including functional academics, communication, social, community, employment, and daily living skills.
I found each day of working with my students both challenging and rewarding. I do not believe in a "one size fits all" approach to education; rather I feel that programs should be developed/adapted to meet the needs of each individual. A Little Bit About Me...

As a student I was most drawn to the ideas of Piaget and Gardner. Their teaching philosophies made the most sense to me when it came to teaching. Piaget focused on the idea of play as learning. This may sound strange to some, but a child is always learning, no matter they are doing, due to the fact that so many experiences are totally new to them. When children stacks blocks they are exploring many scientific concepts such as balance, gravity, cause and effect and many others. When children scribble with crayons they are exploring many concepts of art and aesthetics. Gardner describes the idea of multiple intelligences. Everyone is good at some aspects of learning and less so in others. Children learn in many different ways.

In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. I am also a substitute teacher for a day school. I am currently in graduate school at Eastern Michigan University where I am pursuing a credential in k-12, emotional impairment and learning disabilities.
