I like to be interactive- when I'm teaching I prefer to work through a problem with a student together the first time, letting the student more or less watch me. The second time through, we approach the problem with a little more weight placed on the student. The third time I ask the student to attempt the problem on his/her own, and I'm available for questions. I have tutored informally throughout high school and college, both my fellow peers and lower income students. I was part of an ESL mentoring high school program during my time in New York. During my time at college, I created a mentoring committee for underclassman that focused on business related items and school curriculum. As I spent most of my time in groups studying, I learned that I was very good at explaining principles and material, regardless of subject matter. I am patient, warm, and pleasant. What I do is not so much teach the material as a way to learn the material. Her ADHD can inhibit the learning process, but we are able to work through the problems. Learning about weighted blankets helped me work with her. I find that the best way to tutor my students is to find out what they are struggling with the most in a subject and then helping them with the basics in that subject. I work with the student on the basics and then build up to more difficult material. I am patient with students of all ages. I believe that knowing the basics of a subject is always important.
