I have been teaching at Ohio Business College for the past 4 years. I have taught several accounting courses at the associate degree level. I tutor students that are having difficulty with class material. I also teach students through independent study, where we cover the same material as a regular course, but without a class lecture. I knew after taking a couple of courses when I went back to graduate school in 2003 that I wanted to go into teaching, at least on a part time basis. I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people. I am also an advocate of learning by example; I will walk through a problem or two, step by step, until the process becomes obvious. From there, equations can become identifiable patterns that essentially require you to simply "fill in the blanks".
