I encourage those I tutor to set goals for what they want to learn or accomplish and then assist them in working towards those goals. I am a culinary school graduate and a full-time chef. I have a very solid math background, so I know what concepts students should be learning at their age/level. Therefore, if the students don't have material prepared that they would like to study with me, I can quickly compose exercises for them to do. I ask a lot of questions and try to get the students to figure out the solutions themselves. When they get stuck I give subtle hints until the light bulb goes off. I often explain a concept and then have students watch me solve a problem, then have them do one themselves. I also like to briefly (and sometimes more in depth) explain the big picture so they understand some applications of the math they're doing.
