About Me

Experience Summary

I graduated from the University of Utah with a double-major in math (with an emphasis in statistics) and economics, and a minor in international studies. This fall I will begin a master’s program in International Comparative Education (educational development in third world countries) at Stanford University. I have been giving private lessons in math for over six years and have had over 60 pupils thus far. Most of my pupils currently are in Intermediate Algebra or College Algebra, though I can teach math through Calculus III, linear algebra, differential equations, and analysis. I have taught all ages, from 5 to 74. Most of my pupils are either in junior high or college. For my younger pupils, I hope to not only help them understand the math, but get excited about learning it. I feel I have been very successful with the 50+ kids I have taught over the past six years. Besides helping them with their math, I hope to also instill a strong work ethic and study skills that will benefit them throughout their entire academic career. Many of my college pupils have wanted to clep out of Math 1010 or 1050, something I can help them accomplish in three weeks provided they are ready and willing to work hard. Others rely on me heavily to pass a course so that they can proceed towards obtaining their degree. I can help anyone obtain their goal as long as they are committed, as I am to helping my pupils succeed.

Teaching Style

I have a very solid math background, so I know what concepts students should be learning at their age/level. Therefore, if the students don't have material prepared that they would like to study with me, I can quickly compose exercises for them to do. I ask a lot of questions and try to get the students to figure out the solutions themselves. When they get stuck I give subtle hints until the light bulb goes off. I often explain a concept and then have students watch me solve a problem, then have them do one themselves. I also like to briefly (and sometimes more in depth) explain the big picture so they understand some applications of the math they're doing.
