My comments on tutoring Drawing : I am a professional illustrator

I have a very strong background in Math, Economics, Accounting, Chemistry, and Environmental Science as well as extensive experience in writing, Document Preparation, Quality control and Statistics. I have been a Teacher for over twenty years and have been working as a math and accounting tutor for five years.
I enjoy sharing my education and experience as well as figuring out how each individual student learns and how to adapt my style to fit their needs. I am easy going but very patient but persistent in getting the understanding across. I have worked with and tutored all types from high school dropouts to Doctoral Candidates.

Drawing is one of my top subjects! Highly skilled in draftsmenship(photorealism), cartooning and storyboarding.

My artistic background is wide and rich. I am a three time participant in the nationally known and annually held (since 1921) Summer Indian Art Market, where I have sold many of my paintings, and , am a current member of the prestigious Legends Gallery, located in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have recieved commissions from both private businesses (billboard signs), community centers (murals) and NBC, enlisting me to build several clay masks for the pilot television show, "Reconstruction". I have privately tutored children in drawing and painting as well as taught art classes to children on the Crow reservation in Montana for the Center Pole Community Center. Along with art lessons including clay building, painting, and drawing, I also taught my classes about teamwork, study tips, and coping with reservation life.
I like to encourage kids on how to see the world in simple shapes ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style in the classroom involves the creation of agreements for decorum and expected performance criteria, usually in the form of a rubric for each project assigned. My goal as a tutor is to assist a child with his/her own particular educational needs. I especially enjoy working one on one with children of all ages, observing, listening and drawing them out in creative ways to enhance their learning process.
Although I have only tutored English in Japan to adults and children, I believe my bachelor degree in French and Master's degree in art education combined with one year of student teaching in art provide a strong foundation to be an effective tutor. I can also add my extensive background in holistic health which can be a contribution to the mental/emotional/physical components of a child's learning paradigm.

I began my college career with ambitions to become an elementary school teacher, earning 33 credit hours in Marquette University's Elementary Education program and logging 80 hours of observation and in-class aide work in the Milwaukee Public School system. Upon leaving this program and picking up at the Universtiy of New Mexico, I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Spanish, leaving me with near-native proficiency in that language and a burgeoning ability in Portuguese, which was my minor field of study. Before beginning at UNM, I taught for one year as a team teacher in a preschool catering to homeless families where I was exposed to teaching in a setting heavily influenced by social and personal developmental delays, leading to some creative teaching experience. During this time, I also spent a semester tutoring an English-speaking first grader in Spanish.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of the University of New Mexico I hold both a B.S in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Language Arts and a M.A in Elementary Education. I have been employed in the capacity of classroom teacher for the past 8 years. I have taught both Kindergarten and 3rd Grade. My endorsement area is language arts. I hold a level II K-8 teaching license.
I firmly believe in Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences. Each and every child has the ability to excel, but the most gains can be made if a teacher is aware of each individual child's learning style. I always strive to find the way in which each child learns best and then develop my plan of action to deliver instruction in the way they will benefit most.

More About This Tutor...

I have found I am most successful by not being overly aggressive. I never confront my students with fast-paced drills or time limits. I like to work with students in a cooperative way, one that allows them to discover the best means of figuring out solutions by themselves. My intention is to build confidence and develop problem-solving abilities. Students are generally so pressured they are not able to demonstrate their potential. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere when working with students, one in which there is give and take.
While working as a assistant professor at a number of institutions (including the University of Chicago, University of Texas ,San Antonio and several others) I found I almost always had to teach my students how to take notes, how to read to locate crucial information and how best to structure written assignments. I have also had a lengthy career as ... read more

My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. Creating a reason and success in learning, making it practical and fun can lead any child to want to continue to grow in any area of interest, and tie that back to other skills which my not be so appealing at this point in their life.
I have taught and been certified in four states. Grades 7-9 is the level I prefer, though I have taught at the Junior College level also. History is my major, and having spent much of my you ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a student in Health Science, i.e. Medical Technology, I worked in a genetics laboratory for 14 years learning lab instrumentation, trouble-shooting, cytogenetics and professional etiquette. Lectures as well as public presentations of newly discovered genetic abnormalities was my passion. I truly enjoyed preparing and presenting these exciting talks. I decided to change careers and look into the education field. I have been working on obtaining my Alternative Teaching License and will complete my coursework for this by the end of May, 2011. I have been a teacher's assistant for the past 2 and 1/2 years in kindergarten classes, one of which is a bi-lingual class.
