I like to encourage kids on how to see the world in simple shapes and lines; I feel as though learning art is learning how to "see". My students find that they have more ability than they previously believed, and that believing in themselves is the most important asset that an artist, or anyone, can have. I help them become confident! My techniques stretch beyond the paper and canvas so that, in the end, whether they become skilled artists or not, they learn to appreciate their own "unique-self" and individuality.

My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. Creating a reason and success in learning, making it practical and fun can lead any child to want to continue to grow in any area of interest, and tie that back to other skills which my not be so appealing at this point in their life.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a student in Health Science, i.e. Medical Technology, I worked in a genetics laboratory for 14 years learning lab instrumentation, trouble-shooting, cytogenetics and professional etiquette. Lectures as well as public presentations of newly discovered genetic abnormalities was my passion. I truly enjoyed preparing and presenting these exciting talks. I decided to change careers and look into the education field. I have been working on obtaining my Alternative Teaching License and will complete my coursework for this by the end of May, 2011. A Little Bit About Me...

I've provided tutoring for low-income students on a month-to-month basis around the Albuquerque area. My substitute teaching experience with Rio Rancho district has offered many opportunities for growth as a teacher in many different grade levels and settings. I have provided teaching support at one pre-school, six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school with coverage in most state-required subjects. I've also provided teaching support for eight charter schools around Albuquerque involving 'at-risk' children and youth, grades K-12. I have one class remaining towards New Mexico Teacher Certification in Elementary Education.

My teaching style in the classroom involves the creation of agreements for decorum and expected performance criteria, usually in the form of a rubric for each project assigned. My goal as a tutor is to assist a child with his/her own particular educational needs. I especially enjoy working one on one with children of all ages, observing, listening and drawing them out in creative ways to enhance their learning process.
Although I have only tutored English in Japan to adults and children, I believe my bachelor degree in French and Master's degree in art education combined with one year of student teaching in art provide a strong foundation to be an effective tutor. I can also add my extensive background in holistic health which can be a contribution to the mental/emotional/physical components of a child's learning paradigm.

As a graduate of the University of New Mexico I hold both a B.S in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Language Arts and a M.A in Elementary Education. I have been employed in the capacity of classroom teacher for the past 8 years. I have taught both Kindergarten and 3rd Grade. My endorsement area is language arts. I firmly believe in Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences.
