My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Based on personal experience, not special training

I allow my teaching style to mold itself to each individual student, finding methods of communicating the information that best suit the learning style of my student. I favor a holistic approach to learning, believing that education should be of the whole person. If a student learns how a skill in his tutoring session can be applied in real life, then his or her perception of the subject may fundamentally improve.
I am a graduate of Tennessee Temple University, with experience tutoring at Tennessee Temple University, as well as University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, in various topics, including biodiversity, mathematics (up to pre-calculus), history, and American Sign Language. I continue to study in my personal time as many topics as possible, with the belief that a good tutor is firstly a good student.

I truly enjoy working with children and realize each child has a unique way of learning. Tutoring allows this one-on-one contact to discover how each child learns best. My teaching style focuses on improving a child’s memory and understanding of subjects. I like to alternate subject examples with practice to develop the student’s problem-solving strategies. I also help the student connect abstract concepts with things they can relate to in their own life. I use a lot of positive reinforcement and encouragement. To promote long term understanding I ask the student questions to encourage the student’s explanation to foster a deeper understanding of concepts.
My teaching degree is in Special Education with certification to teach Elementary School and children with Learning Disabilities. I’ve worked with children and teens in schools, teaching reading to adults, and art educatio ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching in 1998. My previous job was taken away by forces of nature. I had taken advantage of the Military Troops to Teachers Program with no clear pathway to practice. Until I found myself with a possibility of unemployment. I I applied at a correctional facility and I was hired over the next week. Hence my introduction to the classroom and the world of academia. Over the next five years I was fortunate enough to teach both classroom and computer lab, loving the challenges and accomplishments more and more everyday. My students were adult learners whom appreciated accomplishing life goals. I continued educating over the next seven years with results that were uplifting and inspirational. Teaching requires a heart.
My teaching style is a type of facilitator approach. I realize the with every classroom there is middle level of learners the same as lower and higher ac ... read more

There are several perspectives to my teaching style-the viewpoint from me, from the student, from the administrator, and from the parent. I am confident about my teaching style. I genuinely believe that all individuals are capable of learning something, whether it is academic or an appropriate behavior. I view myself as low-key, persistent, and encouraging. I've heard students describe me as "someone who can make sense out of the book stuff". Based on results from evaluations, I know that administrators are pleased with my performance. Parents are satisfied when their child has attained knowledge, and like that I am willing to teach their child according to his/her strength and learning style.

I believe in using testing in varied, ongoing forms to drive instruction. I use student interest and favored learning styles as the core, but cross and reteach using multiple modalities so that my students enjoy the process and the outcome. For example, I have developed a core science program using historical biology to interweave physical, earth, space and biological sciences for the middle and high school grades. My goal as a teacher is to have my students develop a questioning, thinking independent mind that can support their thinking with data and creativity.
