Also, working with at risk students, who have experienced failure in traditonal school settings, an educator must work on the negative beliefs of the student, including that the student sees themselves as "dumb" and " not able to learn." One or 2 point increase on a TABE test, needs to be recognized. My teaching style is very straigt forward. First, I determine what the student already knows about the topic. Next, I use direct instruction to relay the material to the student. I teach the student exactly what they need to know...there is no guess work involved. After direct instruction, the student will practice a few questions with my assistance.
