Currently a sophomore in High School, I'm looking to tutor up to around the 6-7th grade levels. I have very much experience in science especially. Currently in biology Honors. Math, Science, Civics, and Art are my main specialties. For a cheaper rate, I also love to teach art. Also language-wise. I have a year of French, as well as a semi-year of Spanish that I can teach beginners, perhaps give them a head start on what is to be in High School. Lastly, I’m fairly understanding in test preparation and strategies even so keeping organized.

My comments on tutoring Testing Skills : I have spent many years working with small groups in k-5 preparing them with skills and strategies to use on their specific assessment. For students in k-3 who are being tested using mClass and Reading 3D, I have worked as part of the "Assessment Team", and also provided professional development for teachers. I have also spent many years working with students in grades 3-5, helping prepare them for eog's. I have collected many materials throughout the years and studied closely the best ways to help prepare for eogs.

I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from UNC-Wilmington. I taught first and second grades for ten years in the classroom. While teaching, I returned to school to receive my Master's Degree in Reading (k-12) and certification as a Reading Specialist. I worked as a Reading Teacher for five years, focusing on grades first through third. I also served as a K-2 Instructional Coach. I have enjoyed guiding children through the stages of reading, beginning with letter recognition and book and print awareness, to successfully completing End of Grade tests. My most recent experience has been helping teach a couple students being homeschooled! What an exciting experience! Unfortunately, the family is moving out of state. Our one on one learning experiences were extremely successful! I’d love to have the opportunity to participate in homeschool teaching again!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a very unique teaching style that enables my students to have fun while learning. I can easily see the individual needs of all of the students I teach. Each and every student that I teach is first and foremost a human being. I treat them as I would like my own children to be treated. I understand that what will appeal to one child will not necessarily work with another. I feel that creating a mutually respectful relationship is fundamental in being able to really reach and teach a child.
I have been very fortunate to have worked with many different age groups and in many different settings, since I first began working in the education field in 2000. As a teacher, I care about students. I believe that positive encouragement is the way to motivate. I worked as a private/public school teacher to provide each student that I worked with the academic/social support that was needed. I used my background in child development to motivate students to work to their potential. I have worked with students from a variety of ethnic/social backgrounds who had a wide range of ability levels. My goal was to meet the needs of the individual learning style of each student. I have tried to make a difference in the lives of children and have them move to the next level of learning, not only with the concepts and knowledge that was necessary, but with a love of the learning process.

I love learning math and science and I enjoy sharing the same love of learning with my students. I like seeing the look on their face when they really get it! Students requiring tutoring are sometimes in academic distress and have anxiety therefore I have a more easy going and patient style of tutoring than most. I believe I'm an effective tutor because I remember the exact same difficulties and questions I had as a student and can relate to their frustration. Most people as well as myself are visual learners thus I teach by working several examples and gradually increasing the difficulty at a pace set by the student. I would rather spend a whole tutoring session working a few examples the student completely understands as opposed to several problems with no understanding. The goal is to slowly establish a pattern of success with simpler work then before the student realizes it they're o ... read more

I have always enjoyed being around children. Being able to help shape young minds and ensure that students are not only getting a great education, but also a great experience. This is why I wanted to become a teacher. As a teacher, I learned that every child is different. Some students learn by listening and some students are very visual. Having a variety of teaching methods is what I found to be most effective. Differentiated learning helped me greatly as a teacher to ensure that all of my students were given a fair chance at learning. I love to make learing fun for students. I enjoy when my students ask questions and are engaged in what they are doing. I know I can make a difference as an educator.

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy working with students. My teaching philosophy is that all children can learn. I subscribe to the constructivism approach to teaching. This is where students scaffold their own knowledge from other experiences. I believe that if you can get a student interested in something they are more likely to enjoy what they are learning about and are more likely to be successful. I am cheerful, kind and enthusiastic which I also feel help encourage students to be successful learners.

I have not taught anyone or tutored anyone for money. However, I would like to have the oppitunity to be able to tutor children or young adults on their way of the journey of life. I too was tutored going through school and not just once. I attended Sylvin Learning Center every other year since sixth grade. It helped me understand the areas that I didnt and excel in the areas I did. I would like to give thas opportunity to someone else.
I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. My goal is to provide the best education possible and to suceed in that is to have great communication and alittle fun doing the work that is expected.
