A Little Bit About Me...

I'm in my senior year of High School, I have worked with my siblings on their school all of my life. I've helped my little brother who has ADHD with his homework, I've worked with him through book projects, spelling tests, history homework, pretty much anything and everything. I'm also very talented in the English area, writing and grammar specifically. Can write with both my right and my left hands, I work well with children no matter the age.
Teaching style varies on the child in questions ability to learn. I'm patient and will do anything it takes to help the child.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching experience has been centered around a field of a court. Since the age of thirteen I have been helping a wide age group of kids learn to play soccer and basketball. When I was in high school I helped to volunteer at camps often running my own drills and games. Continuing into my college career I continued to teach soccer. At Augsburg College we have a camp each year for the kids from the Cedar-Riverside community. It is put on by the men's and women's Augsburg players. Though this is our biggest camp of the year, we have many more such as our President's day camp or our Memorial day camp. At each camp we devote our time to teaching kids how to head the ball, kick properly, strike, and teach them new moves while helping to perfect their old moves.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. Also, I helped these students develop their writing and grammar skills. Starting my junior and senior year of high school, I began "one on one" tutoring with selected individuals. Study buddies was a program where several students would show up and the helpers would assist accordingly, but when I began tutoring I specifically met with them at assigned times. Because I have had the opportunity to work with students of many different ages and abilities, I have learned that there is no "right" way to teach/tutor. As a tutor I have had to adjust my teaching style depending on the type of student I am working with. What works for one student may not necessarily work with another. For example, if a student has a lackadaisical attitude, I will do what I can to try to motivate him/her. Other students may be very motivated, but may need help with focusing, organizing or other key skill. With all students, I try to be as patient as possible and as clear as I possibly can when I am explaining material.

In addition to my professional background, I have roughly a decade worth of experience as a volunteer (and professional) reading tutor and teacher. I worked with grade schools at Hancock and Horace Mann Elementary Schools as a volunteer tutor. I taught after-school classes at Battle Creek and Highland Park Junior High.
I am flexible and patient. I understand that reading and writing doesn't come easily to a lot of students. It is, in its own way, a skill not unlike hitting a golf ball or being a really good cook. I work with the student to find what clicks for them and then go from there. I was fortunate to have patient teachers who got the best out of me. I wish to do the same with students.
