I have had an extensive career in business. I have had a number of accounting/finance positions in the business world. My most successful position was with a chain of 30 Hallmark stores. I started as the accountant and eventually became the President of the company. I have had other positions as Controller and Accountants of other businesses.
I would be able to instruct children with the basics and also explain how these basic concepts are used and why they are important in a real environment. My goal would be to get my students excited about their future and impress upon them that they can achieve anything they desire with hard work.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, volunteering for the Salvation Army, or running after school programs after graduating. I am a PA certified tutor, with conflict resolution, mentor, and CERT training (Community Emergency Rescue Team). It is important to me to have a profession where I feel that I am helping other people to progress in their lives. I genuinely care about the well being of each person I come into contact to and want to help in any way I can to make life easier, and more fulfilling for all of us.
I have experience teaching many types of students. I worked one-on-one, daily, with an autistic student during my last position, so I understand that not every student learns in the same way. I think it works well to give shorter lessons to a small group, an ... read more

Through my independent studies, and the theories of teaching that I've learned, I know that students learn in different ways. I am a staunch believer in the teacher making any and all necessary adaptations to help students reach their and my maximal expectations. Beyond the skills that a student must possess to attain their goals and succeed, the teacher must first instill a sense of worth and inspiration to drive the student. Whether it is a better grade or just the intrinsic value of learning something, all students must be given something to strive for. I hope to truly teach all of the students that I will encounter in my lifetime some sort of skill that will be of true value to them.
I've been an avid, life-long reader and writer. I never intended to become a teacher until I began to work with children who have autism. My passion to work with kids, and teach, started in those f ... read more

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

During college, I spent many hours perfecting papers by revising, editing, and proofreading. This helped me to master the art of english composition and essay writing. By studying writing, I have learned creative and technical tactics to add to my style of writing. Understanding the different ways to approach a subject of writing is beneficial to the essays and papers I write. I have personally written and also taught students to write interpretive essays, persuasive essays, memoirs, creative articles of fiction, and research papers on subjects found in literature. All of these topics interest me, which provides me with a desire to teach what I have learned to others.
When I work with others on writing papers, I always make sure to tell them why I suggest the changes I do. Making sure that they understand why I suggest a change is important. Reinforcing those rules while als ... read more

I feel very comfortable dealing with the technical side of the English language--that is, the grammatical side. I am also quite comfortable discussing theme, characters, and various plot devices in novels. During high school, I excelled in the Advanced Placement English programs, and in my time at Penn State University, I have taken a number of honors courses to further my education, focusing my studies on writing; additionally, I have completed an editorial internship, writing and editing numerous articles for both magazines and newspapers in the State College area. My degree from Penn State is a Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis on publishing.
As a person who is both respectful and fond of the English language, I feel that I have an advantage in opening lines of communication with students. Because my area of expertise is language, I find it easy to express myself in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that every student can choose where he/she wants to go, as long as they are given the tools to acheive these ambitions. I have a heart for children and love watching their minds embrace new ideas and concepts. If I provide the patience, experience, motivation and materials, I hope that every student I have guided (or will guide) will go on to do great things. Working in a French public school taught me more patience than I thought I had. But in doing so, I am now prepared to deal with all types of children. If you show me even the slightest interest in learning, I'll coach you all the way! Let's learn together!

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel as if I have been preparing for this role my entire life. While still in high school, I became a peer tutor for grades K-12. I continued tutoring while attending Saint Vincent College, where I volunteered as a teacher for the Step-Up Program - I taught a literature class for home and cyber school students. For the past year, I've been a substitute teacher in many local school districts and have also completed some one-on-one tutoring in secondary level History and English. My broad range of teaching and tutoring experience has allowed me to acquire an array of techniques and information, including extensive grammatical and researching skills.
I have always enjoyed working with children. My current position as a substitute teacher and tutor has allowed me to work with many different children and experience how to teach in different settings. Each child learns differently, and ... read more

My experience as a both a writer and reader has been instrumental in developing my ability to relate to students the specific rewards and challenges inherent to the disciplines, and I've found this to be of more practical value to the effectiveness of my teaching than anything else. At the heart of my philosophy is the belief that a student should find in a teacher a model for how to approach a subject, some reflection and validation of their own experiences, and some direction for how to negotiate the multiple paths down which those experiences may lead. The practice of this belief demands that I approach the subject as a facilitator of this experience, as something of a master-student, if you will, rather than a teacher. My primary goal is to help students develop identities as writers and readers that will serve both their personal and academic lives, and this often has the effect ... read more

I have been very successful in academics throughout my education. I was valedictorian of my high school, and I received the top honors in English, French, and Accounting. I also maintained a 4.0 average throughout my college education.
I love working with children of all ages and abilities and helping them with academics. I don't believe I have a specific teaching style. I know that I have to be flexible and creative with each student. Everyone learns differently, and I feel it is my obligation to find what works for each child. I do belive in providing hands on and real life scenarios when teaching.
