I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, volunteering for the Salvation Army, or running after school programs after graduating. I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

When I work with others on writing papers, I always make sure to tell them why I suggest the changes I do. Making sure that they understand why I suggest a change is important. Reinforcing those rules while also pointing to an example on their own work always helps to show the students how to improve their own writing. I believe that showing them rather than telling them is a productive strategy to teaching composition and reinforcing the etiquette involved in essay writing. Pointing out these areas of improvement to the student on a one-on-one basis allows the student to learn and implement changes in the future.
