Journalism is one of my top subjects! Having served as both a contributing author and editor of UNG's online newspaper publications, my passion for journalism is strong. Under the tutelage of Ron Martz, a 30+ years veteran of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, I developed a myriad of writing, editing, and interviewing skills.

First and foremost, I am passionate about helping children and youth learn, overcome obstacles, and believe in themselves, whether that be academically or otherwise. Over the years, I have learned and had the opportunity to work with and encourage children and teenagers with various behavioral issues, ranging from Aspergers Syndyrome to anxiety and anger issues,so I have a great deal of patience with students whom others consider difficult to work with. Having graduated from the University of North Georgia with a degree in Writing & Publication and a Minor in Mass Communications, I'm confident that the skills I've acquired would serve me well as an effective tutor. My outgoing personality, sense of humor, patience, and 6-summer experience as a camp counselor combine to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere for the students I tutor . With a genuine enthusiasm for working with people fr ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In 2006 I taught graphic design topics at Westwood College. In 2007 I taught the same subject at The Creative Circus (roughly equivalent to an MBA program for designers, writers, photographers, and art directors). In 2008 I taught in the design department for Georgia State University. This summer I traveled to a remote region in India to teach English. I have taught GRE prep for the past 3 years, covering the verbal, quantitative (math), and analytical writing (essay) areas. As a test prep teacher, I have a close knowledge of students' approach to graduate school, and the process of improving their chances of acceptance to schools of choice. I am academically qualified and more especially interested in teaching humanities courses.
The method of teaching I prefer is maieutic, i.e., one which draws knowledge from the student, rather than attempts to place it in him/her from wit ... read more

My teaching style encourages relating reading and writing to what they are already reading, writing and listening to. If students can understand language and grammar in their own context and how it is useful then it will be better and easier to incorporate into their own writing and reading and therefore more natural. For example, while teaching ballads I introduced a Coldplay and Bob Dylan songs to students to better understand Lord Randall and other ballads of the time. I am driven by watching students succeed as far as test scores are concerned, but also teaching them the life skills that literature introduces to us.
My experience consists of working with students in a classroom as well as working one on one with students through tutoring. While finishing my English Education degree I worked with a tutoring group in low income schools. I worked in a middle school language arts c ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

To go along with my writing passion, I also have a passion for working with children. I understand that each child is different; different skill sets, different learning methods and different needs. I like to get a deeper understanding of each child - their likes, interests, and goals - and use those things to creatively teach new concepts and ideas, or reaffirm old ones. I understand that not every child enjoys certain subjects, such as writing, but I try to make the process as enjoyable as possible. It brings me great joy when I see a child light up because they finally understand something. It is my goal to achieve that in each situation.
After graduating from high school with high honors, I struggled to make the transition from that rigid environment, to one of endless possibilities. I weighed the pros and cons of a graphic design or teaching major, taking classes in both the f ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe that the best way to teach a child or student is by listening to them first. By understanding what they see in the subject, I am able to put what they need to learn into perspective for them. Patience and a great listening ear is the best approach when it comes to communicating the right instructions.
During my last two years at Shorter University, I was employed by both the Shorter University Writing Center and the Shorter University Periscope (the newspaper). I spent those two years tutoring students on the composition and structure of essays, and helped them edit and proofread their work. As an editor for the newspaper, I was a mentor to all of my staff writers, as well as a contributor myself.

More About This Tutor...

Over the course of the past 10 years I have spent time working with students struggling to develop their academic skills, particularly in the areas of language arts and the social studies. From my initial work as a foster care academic transitions liaison,to the attainment of my M.ED., my broad service as a classroom teacher, department chair and A.P. program coordinator, I have been fortunate to work with students from across the broadest possible ability spectrum and have learned to sow the seeds of confidence and success in learners of all competency and motivational levels.
Due to my experience with a broad range of young learners, each working at a different academic and or cognitive pace, I follow a modified Socratic approach to both my classroom and one on one instruction by placing the emphasis on the student as we identify areas for growth. I then sculpt an academic progra ... read more
