A Little Bit About Me...

I base my teaching on Vygotsky's theory of the Zone of Proximal Development. This theory states that a student can reach a higher level of learning through following the adult's model/example. As the student learns higher level skills, adult guidance is slowly phased out in order to achieve independent functioning. I work with each student's unique abilities and strengths in order to maximize their potential. I also strongly believe that children learn best when they feel comfortable, and confident in their abilities. I strive to make learning fun, while staying structured.
I am a speech and language pathologist with a Masters Degree in Communicative Disorders. I have 6 years working in the public school setting with elementary and middle school students. A Little Bit About Me...

After twenty years in the financial area I went back to school to obtain a special education credential and found a passion for teaching. While in school I worked as a teacher's aide at Seaside High School, and taught 5th grade summer school for two years. After completing my education course work I received a contract with Monterey Peninsula Unified School District and taught at Los Arboles Middle School. My middle school students had varying disabilities. The focus in my classroom was to determine what each student needed to succeed.
It is important for me to determine what motivates each student to learn, what their interests are and what is important to them.
