A Little Bit About Me...

In high school and throughout my college career, I have tutored many ages- varying from age 8 to age 30. I've earned a BA in English from Kent State University in 2007, and it has helped me to understand the importance of literacy in young adults as well as continuing education. I worked at the Ohio Literacy Resource Center as a tutor for college students, and have been involved with Junior Achievement and tutored French to third grade students for both Garfield Elementary School and Ella Canavan Elementary School in Medina, Ohio during high school.
I love to work with all ages, and I believe my approach to tutoring varies depending upon each individual student. I thoroughly enjoyed the Marketing and Public Relations field, but I never could have imagined the fulfillment I would recieve within education. I love to challenge my students and show them just how much they can achieve through hard work and dedication. I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people. I am also an advocate of learning by example; I will walk through a problem or two, step by step, until the process becomes obvious. From there, equations can become identifiable patterns that essentially require you to simply "fill in the blanks".
