I feel that in teaching my goal is to effectively reach all children. Individual care and attention are the most effective ways which I feel a child can be persuaded to learn. I take pride in being patient and think that every child has brilliance to show, they just show their skills at different and varying degrees.
In 2003 I traveled to India where I began work in a village in the South teaching English and Sociology to 4-11th graders. The experience was incredibly rewarding and was a wonderful vision into the complexities of education and culture. I like to think of my style as a very patient style which allows me to get to know my students. I believe everyone can learn if they want to so finding there motivatin is part of the process. My college experience was unique to the learning community. Instead of theorizing and contemplating what lives the subjects we studied were living, we lived amongst those most only read about. In addition to traditional bouts of homework and exams I lived in the homes and attended their schools. The philosophy, language and religions they lived became our texts. During which I spent an extended amount of time learning about Japanese culture, their language and their traditions. In Japan I was able to pick up a majority of their spoken and written language, which inevitably assisted me in completing an unprecedented study of the Chinese in Japan. Though I received my degree last June, most of my teaching experience came while I was still learning. In high school, I worked as a museum docent for after-school programs - at one point trying to convince 3rd graders that M.C. Escher's life and work were as exciting as the afternoon TV they were missing. While in college, I worked for Apple computer, teaching adults in one-on-one tutoring sessions in computer usage. My method of studying for my finals was to show up to study groups not to learn the answers, but to reinforce my own learning by explaining the relevant topics to my peers. After graduating, I worked for at Apple full time before moving to the Big Island and working various jobs, most recently for a tour company.
