A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is highly student focused. Instead of providing only textbook reading and writing my classroom focuses on having the students work hands on to create models of the systems they are learning so they can develop their own understanding of the material. I believe that all students should have an interest in the workings of biology especially related to the human body. A priority of mine is to make sure the students are not rushed in their learning. I believe that each student should be encouraged to proceed at a pace that fosters learning and not rote memorization. My strategy to learning unknown subjects is very close to the same way children learn to walk, by immersion. Everything we learned as children was assimilated through watching, mimicking and attempting. I believe personal experience and learning are very close and in teaching I try to keep that in mind. I find myself a very visually inclined learner and utilize that to help others learn, such as drawing or watching videos. I have found that audio learners do well when given analogies and kinesthetic learners do well with drills or acting out what they have learned all to mimic what their learning so that it might sink in better much like how when we learned to say our first words.

Though I received my degree last June, most of my teaching experience came while I was still learning. In high school, I worked as a museum docent for after-school programs - at one point trying to convince 3rd graders that M.C. Escher's life and work were as exciting as the afternoon TV they were missing. While in college, I worked for Apple computer, teaching adults in one-on-one tutoring sessions in computer usage. My method of studying for my finals was to show up to study groups not to learn the answers, but to reinforce my own learning by explaining the relevant topics to my peers.
