A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated in 2004 form Portland State University with a Social Sciene degree. I have been in teaching since 2008 when I passed my substitute teachers class. Since that time I subbed off and on until January 2010 when I got a long term assignment In the ALC at Hilo High School. I thought English, Math and really learned a lot through my experience. I am still currently a substitute teacher. I also deal with children when I volunteer coaching T-ball for Lincoln Wreckers since 2009.
I like to think of my style as a very patient style which allows me to get to know my students. I believe everyone can learn if they want to so finding there motivatin is part of the process. Though I received my degree last June, most of my teaching experience came while I was still learning. In high school, I worked as a museum docent for after-school programs - at one point trying to convince 3rd graders that M.C. Escher's life and work were as exciting as the afternoon TV they were missing. While in college, I worked for Apple computer, teaching adults in one-on-one tutoring sessions in computer usage. My method of studying for my finals was to show up to study groups not to learn the answers, but to reinforce my own learning by explaining the relevant topics to my peers. After graduating, I worked for at Apple full time before moving to the Big Island and working various jobs, most recently for a tour company.

My career in education began while attending CSUN. I started as a paraprofessional at a charter school, and also was able to teach my own elective classes. I graduated with a BA in Deaf Studies, with a concentration in Language and Culture. After moving to northern California, I worked at a college as an ASL interpreter. I went on to teach ASL at a private High School in San Francisco for 3 years. I am currently teaching Deaf students at the high school level. My educational background and specialty is primarily Deaf Ed. and ASL, however, I have a well-rounded knowledge of various subjects that I have used in education over the last 6 years.

In 2003 I traveled to India where I began work in a village in the South teaching English and Sociology to 4-11th graders. The experience was incredibly rewarding and was a wonderful vision into the complexities of education and culture. Due to this multi cultural experience I feel that I have a great skill in reaching students with multi ethnic backgrounds, and understand the discrepencies between written and spoken language.
I feel that in teaching my goal is to effectively reach all children. Individual care and attention are the most effective ways which I feel a child can be persuaded to learn. I take pride in being patient and think that every child has brilliance to show, they just show their skills at different and varying degrees.
