I recently graduated with my Master's degree in Social Welfare from the University of California at Berkeley, and earned my first graduate degree in 1997 at the University of California at Los Angeles in Education. I taught 2nd grade in a bilingual Spanish classroom from 1996 to 2000 for the Los Angeles Unified School District. I also taught English to high school students for the Peace Corps in Nicaragua. I have studied foreign languages and speak Spanish and Portuguese fluently, and also speak some French and Japanese. My college experience was unique to the learning community. Instead of theorizing and contemplating what lives the subjects we studied were living, we lived amongst those most only read about. In addition to traditional bouts of homework and exams I lived in the homes and attended their schools. The philosophy, language and religions they lived became our texts. During which I spent an extended amount of time learning about Japanese culture, their language and their traditions. In Japan I was able to pick up a majority of their spoken and written language, which inevitably assisted me in completing an unprecedented study of the Chinese in Japan. In 2003 I traveled to India where I began work in a village in the South teaching English and Sociology to 4-11th graders. The experience was incredibly rewarding and was a wonderful vision into the complexities of education and culture. Due to this multi cultural experience I feel that I have a great skill in reaching students with multi ethnic backgrounds, and understand the discrepencies between written and spoken language. I feel that in teaching my goal is to effectively reach all children. Individual care and attention are the most effective ways which I feel a child can be persuaded to learn. My career in education began while attending CSUN. I started as a paraprofessional at a charter school, and also was able to teach my own elective classes. I graduated with a BA in Deaf Studies, with a concentration in Language and Culture. After moving to northern California, I worked at a college as an ASL interpreter. I graduated in 2004 form Portland State University with a Social Sciene degree. I have been in teaching since 2008 when I passed my substitute teachers class. Though I received my degree last June, most of my teaching experience came while I was still learning. In high school, I worked as a museum docent for after-school programs - at one point trying to convince 3rd graders that M.C. Escher's life and work were as exciting as the afternoon TV they were missing. While in college, I worked for Apple computer, teaching adults in one-on-one tutoring sessions in computer usage. My method of studying for my finals was to show up to study groups not to learn the answers, but to reinforce my own learning by explaining the relevant topics to my peers. After graduating, I worked for at Apple full time before moving to the Big Island and working various jobs, most recently for a tour company.
