A Little Bit About Me...

During my year as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Earth Ethics Institute, a non-profit organization at Miami Dade College, I was responsible for the successful execution of five high-profile programs. I strengthened my ability to multitask and was able to effectively implement each program’s components at their full potential and capabilities. I became accustomed to working independently under strict deadlines and overseeing many service-learning college students who assisted with events. As many of these service-learners regarded me as a role-model, I committed myself to bringing out their full potentials while mentoring them through their college experiences. I was considered the unofficial technological assistant of my workplace due to my proficiency at Microsoft Office and my ability to work at an exceedingly fast pace. In addition to this, my co-workers often request that I overview ... read more

My comments on tutoring Marine Biology : Was a Marine Biology minor in college. I also worked for over a year and half as a Marine Mammal Biologist.

I obtained a B.S. in Biology, with a concentration in aquatic science, from Wittenberg University in 2006. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored elementary students in math and science twice a week for two years. After college, I moved into the marine science profession. In August of 2008, I started teaching High School Biology I, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science to students in Polk County. In addition, after school hours were spent with two students taking AP Biology classes. Both students achieved a 4 or higher on their placement exams. My tutored students reported an increase in their ability to record class notes, study, and take tests. My previous tutoring experiences have included subjects such as; elementary science, elementary math, Algebra (I & II), Geometry, Pre- Calculus, Anatomy, Physiology, Biology (both College and HS level), HS Chemistry, basic w ... read more

15 years experience in a broad variety of subjects!

I have a way of perceiving the difficulty the student has, and am able to explain the material in a simple way that makes it easy for students to grasp. I have a good rapport with my student and have had several that have told me that I am the best teacher they have ever had(which didn't hurt my ego!!) I also have a good sense of humor which puts students at ease- and it is proven that a tense mind can not learn, only when the student loses their anxiety over the material will they absorb it!
I have been tutoring for over 15 years both in students homes or at public locations such as coffee shops or the public library. My education and experience are broad. I was educated at "Ivy League" level schools and purposefully educated myself in a large variety of the humanities, which in essence all tie together. Basic courses up through most High School material outside of the Humanit ... read more

I prefer to work with children who have learning disabilities and/or with a dislike for education. I find that my teaching style is interesting to this particular type of student. I acknowledge the childs dismay in learning and I allow them to help me to adjust the teaching material to a teaching style that best suits the childs learning style. Science and english are subjects that many children don't enjoy. I make it much easier for them to learn the subject and then we expound thier knowledge from there.
I graduated from UCF with a Bachelors in Communicative Disorders (speech therapy). I love english and science and found this to be a perfect mix. I worked with children with language delays in group settings and also tutored children individually. I am currently in the process of obtaining my teaching certificate in science and working towards my masters degree.

My teaching style is all about application and functionality. How do I apply it to real life situations, so that the student can better remember it. That is my first train of thought when presenting material. With math, the key to math is take it one step at a time. I want to know what the student is thinking and key in on their mistakes and let them guide themselves out of their mistakes, so that they learn the correct steps to solving the problem. But the key to my overall teaching style is my personality which is comforting that allows for a good rapport, and excellent communication between teacher and student.
Since my days as a math tutor in college for high school students, I knew that I had the ability to explain numbers and abstract information to students across the demographic. I have a BS in Occupational Therapy, so I have the ability to functionally apply science ... read more

My experience teaching children started in the water. That is a difficult place to start as many children fear the water. I quickly learned that individual students learn in different ways and at different paces. After studying Marine Biology in an academic setting I finally became able to share my passion for science and knowledge for math with students in a way that enabled me to not only share knowledge, but motivate students to become passionate about the subjects I find so interesting. I've been a professional full time Middle School Science teacher for two years and look forward to continue sharing my experiences and knowledge with students in various settings. As I've learned through hands-on experience as well as through formal training, patience and positive reinforcement are the best ways to get results and help children succeed in any area. As an undergraduate I started to tutor Chemistry in 2007. Since then I have tutored Chemistry to many different students in one-on-one and large group sessions. I have submitted by certification to be accepted by the State of Florida Department of Education and am awaiting confirmation. While in college I made straight A's for about 3 years, excelling in the sciences. I am very experienced with General Chemistry labs and lecture sessions. I am currently the Science Teacher at the First Academy Classical School program where I teach Biology and Chemistry part-time.
I love to cater to each students needs. That's why I love tutoring because I can do this. Some students are visual learners, some learn by hearing, and some by doing. I incorporate all of these into my tutoring. I want to see all of my students not only get good grades but to truly grasp the concepts.
