During my year as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Earth Ethics Institute, a non-profit organization at Miami Dade College, I was responsible for the successful execution of five high-profile programs. I strengthened my ability to multitask and was able to effectively implement each program’s components at their full potential and capabilities. I became accustomed to working independently under strict deadlines and overseeing many service-learning college students who assisted with events. As many of these service-learners regarded me as a role-model, I committed myself to bringing out their full potentials while mentoring them through their college experiences. I was considered the unofficial technological assistant of my workplace due to my proficiency at Microsoft Office and my ability to work at an exceedingly fast pace. In addition to this, my co-workers often request that I overview ... read more

My comments on tutoring Marine Biology : Was a Marine Biology minor in college. I also worked for over a year and half as a Marine Mammal Biologist.

I obtained a B.S. in Biology, with a concentration in aquatic science, from Wittenberg University in 2006. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored elementary students in math and science twice a week for two years. After college, I moved into the marine science profession. In August of 2008, I started teaching High School Biology I, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science to students in Polk County. In addition, after school hours were spent with two students taking AP Biology classes. Both students achieved a 4 or higher on their placement exams. My tutored students reported an increase in their ability to record class notes, study, and take tests. My previous tutoring experiences have included subjects such as; elementary science, elementary math, Algebra (I & II), Geometry, Pre- Calculus, Anatomy, Physiology, Biology (both College and HS level), HS Chemistry, basic w ... read more

15 years experience in a broad variety of subjects!

I have a way of perceiving the difficulty the student has, and am able to explain the material in a simple way that makes it easy for students to grasp. I have a good rapport with my student and have had several that have told me that I am the best teacher they have ever had(which didn't hurt my ego!!) I also have a good sense of humor which puts students at ease- and it is proven that a tense mind can not learn, only when the student loses their anxiety over the material will they absorb it!
I have been tutoring for over 15 years both in students homes or at public locations such as coffee shops or the public library. My education and experience are broad. I was educated at "Ivy League" level schools and purposefully educated myself in a large variety of the humanities, which in essence all tie together. Basic courses up through most High School material outside of the Humanit ... read more

Assisting students with their study has been the most rewarding experience, which I hope to continue. I first teach the students how to study so that they are able to fully understand the material, grasp it, and be able to apply it, and not have to memorize purely for that purpose. I have been able to apply a few simple steps with the students which have proven effective and help in any subject. I love working with children and see that every child has the potential to be successful when they are instructed properly.
I have earned a bachelors degree in Business Administration as well as a masters in Finance. This education not only allowed me to gain the knowledge but learn to apply it. I am able to tutor not only in the sciences but also the arts. Throughout my volunteer experience in helping students of all ages with their study, I have learned to instruct students how to s ... read more

I learned quickly in my career that all children learn in unique ways...what works for one does not necessarily work for another. I use diagrams, pictures, examples, stories, and labs to teach students in a way that excites and engages them. I generally have a good relationship with my students and strive to make learning fun and rewarding. My philosophy is that every child is capable of achieving success if given the right tools and taught how to use them effectively.
As a graduate witha focus on science, I have learned to develop unique ways to enrich, engage, and excite students about science. I not only have a Bachelors of Science in Natural Resource Sciences, but I have many years of experience educating youth about all aspects of the sciences. I have learned what srategies work with youth so they can feel comfortable int he learning process, as well. Over the past three years ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always had a passion for education whether it be while obtaining my degrees, or helping out other students with their studies. I have earned an Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts, which gave me an opportunity to be a well-rounded student. I have earned my Bachelor's in Biology allowing a strong understanding of math and science skills. I have tutored students in Algebra, Biology and Mammalian Physiology.
My style of teaching varies from each student that I have ever had the joy of tutoring. I take my own studying skills which involve both visual and hands-on approaches and see how well it is a fit for the person I am tutoring. I know that sometimes it takes a lot of patience to grasp certain concepts or ideas, and that is a virtue that I possess. I do make the learning experience a fun one by relating it to every day life and creating activities that relay the informatio ... read more

I love teaching. I believe that teachers make the most impact in a child's life and often change the course of their lives. I find that students learn differently and like to incorporate audio/visual teaching with hands-on projects. I believe that children learn best when they enjoy what they are experiencing, so I try to make my lessons enjoyable and informative.

My experience teaching children started in the water. That is a difficult place to start as many children fear the water. I quickly learned that individual students learn in different ways and at different paces. After studying Marine Biology in an academic setting I finally became able to share my passion for science and knowledge for math with students in a way that enabled me to not only share knowledge, but motivate students to become passionate about the subjects I find so interesting. I've been a professional full time Middle School Science teacher for two years and look forward to continue sharing my experiences and knowledge with students in various settings. As I've learned through hands-on experience as well as through formal training, patience and positive reinforcement are the best ways to get results and help children succeed in any area. Since my days as a math tutor in college for high school students, I knew that I had the ability to explain numbers and abstract information to students across the demographic. I have a BS in Occupational Therapy, so I have the ability to functionally apply science information. I have a professional teaching license through the Florida Department of Education in Biology as well. In my current teaching position I monitor labs in which students take classes through online programs, many of these students require assistance in math, which I have more than adequately assisted them with to obtain their credit. I feel that my articulate style is also is a trait that is necessary to assist with students in essay writing.

I believe that authentic learning experiences are the most powerful. Each of us learns differently and for different reasons and we all have disabilities; some are just easier to see than others. Any true learning experience must begin with the educator understanding the learner. The purpose behind learning anything can not be dismissed using the rationale "because I said so". Still, I also believe that there is a skill set that we must all possess. Therefore, I believe that a curriculum should be followed but, in addition to a curriculum, an effective educator must be able to bring any lesson to life and insure that it is meaningful and memorable; only then can we be sure that the content was actually learned and retained.
