A Little Bit About Me...

I have the natural ability to relate to kids of all ages. I was a waterpolo coach for five years, and a volunteer mentor for the Blue Ox School in Eureka. I tend to be straight forward and open with the kids about why the authors wrote the books, what they wanted their readers to get out of them, and how these authors weaved lessons into a classic storyline. Your children will immediately feel more connected to these books and short stories, and their reading comprehension will increase five fold.
As a Humboldt State University Student I was buried in English for Eight hours a day, five full years. My emphasis was in YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE, and I have read and reread all the books in the California State High School Curriculum multiple times. While at Humboldt State, I completed the College Faculty Preparation Program. This program significantly improved my teaching pedagogy. With regards to tutoring, I feel that it is extremely important to understand and draw on the student’s learning style. As a kinesthetic learner, I frequently promote tactile learning while also introducing elements of visual, auditory, and/or reading/writing exercises, depending on what works best for the student. I’m patient and considerate but feel that it is important to set high expectations for each of my students.

I graduated from university in the top 2% of my graduating class, then went on to earn a masters in Comparative Literature. The Pennsylvania State University awarded my a graduate teaching fellowship for the duration of my masters studies. This fellowship allowed me to teach two college level courses in world literature, English composition and rhetoric, and French. In 2005, I moved to Hawaii to take a full time job as a language arts instructor at a well known private school. I taught there for four years and headed the deparment during my last year.
