A Little Bit About Me...

I have the natural ability to relate to kids of all ages. I was a waterpolo coach for five years, and a volunteer mentor for the Blue Ox School in Eureka. I tend to be straight forward and open with the kids about why the authors wrote the books, what they wanted their readers to get out of them, and how these authors weaved lessons into a classic storyline. Your children will immediately feel more connected to these books and short stories, and their reading comprehension will increase five fold.
As a Humboldt State University Student I was buried in English for Eight hours a day, five full years. A Little Bit About Me...

While at Humboldt State, I completed the College Faculty Preparation Program. This program significantly improved my teaching pedagogy. With regards to tutoring, I feel that it is extremely important to understand and draw on the student’s learning style. As a kinesthetic learner, I frequently promote tactile learning while also introducing elements of visual, auditory, and/or reading/writing exercises, depending on what works best for the student. I’m patient and considerate but feel that it is important to set high expectations for each of my students.

Since each person has his or her own way of learning, I like to be creative with teaching in order to find a style that best suits the student's needs. Along with traditional teaching methods, such as worksheets and practice sheets, I like to also add a variety of activities (roleplaying, games) that keep the lesson interesting as well as encourage the student to think about the topic from a different angle, perhaps making it easier for them to understand the topic.

I hold a BA in English from Saint Olaf College and studied a variety of subjects during my time in the Liberal Arts program. I have worked with many college graduates helping them prepare for the GRE in both the English and Math sections, as well as assisting high school students in preparing for their SATs and ACTs.
