Learning starts with a desire, followed by perseverance

I have a high level of experience teaching in multiple fields. I have trained horses, which takes non-verbal communication, patience, kindness, clear directions, and strong leadership skills. I have taught horseback riding lessons for 7 years, which has taught me excellent communication skills, lesson-building skills, and flexibility. I have worked as coordinator for a barn, from which I gained high-level organizational skills. I have tutored multiple people in English as a Second Language, several in America on a one-on-one basis. I have the natural ability to relate to kids of all ages. I was a waterpolo coach for five years, and a volunteer mentor for the Blue Ox School in Eureka. I tend to be straight forward and open with the kids about why the authors wrote the books, what they wanted their readers to get out of them, and how these authors weaved lessons into a classic storyline. With regards to tutoring, I feel that it is extremely important to understand and draw on the student’s learning style. A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from university in the top 2% of my graduating class, then went on to earn a masters in Comparative Literature. The Pennsylvania State University awarded my a graduate teaching fellowship for the duration of my masters studies. This fellowship allowed me to teach two college level courses in world literature, English composition and rhetoric, and French. In 2005, I moved to Hawaii to take a full time job as a language arts instructor at a well known private school. I taught there for four years and headed the deparment during my last year. While teaching high school, I also tutored and taught community college writing courses.
