I believe teaching is best learned though practical examples (especially math). because I used to say the same thing that I'm sure that kids today are saying. When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas to predict market declines (algorithms), to basic math in in inventory work, to understanding complex words and their proper sentence usage so they can understand what rudimentary or neophyte means in a job interview. My goal is to use a variety of methods in order to facilitate learning and retention. These methods will vary student-to-student. HOW I teach, however, remains constant for all students. Specifically, I start with the standards: what needs to be learned. Working backwards, I break the standards up into smaller concepts. Once the concepts are explained to the student, and the student understands the concepts, repetition begins in order to facilitate retention. Smaller concepts are then tied into larger ones.
