Practice practice practice! Asl is not a language you can learn from a book. It is concept based and requires a lot of time.
I obtained my interpreting/transliterating degree from Columbus State Community a college in 1999, established my own interpreting agency one year later. I have been a professional interpreter for 15 years and I am nationally certified. I have interpreted in every situation imaginable and then some! I believe the best way to teach students is by utilizing a variety of learning styles. For example, for a visual learner, diagrams and pictures should be used but in order to compliment that repeating audible explanations would be great for someone who is an auditory learner. I grew up in Texas and attended Abilene Christian University for four years. This also included two summers in Mexico. I lack only one semester completing my BA in Spanish. However, I chose to marry a Canadian and instead of finishing my degree, I moved to Canada. Over the years, I have periodically used my Spanish while travelling to places such as Honduras and Panama.
