I prefer working with African American children. I believe they are usually the most neglected children in the public school systems. I try to work as a mentor and guide children through projects and activties, rather than work as their "guru". I believe all children are gifted they just need the direction and encouragement to steer them through their experiences. I believe the key to teaching is finding what each child is interested in and making that connection. Every child is unique and learns best in their own special way. Teachers have the ability to change the world and I feel extremely lucky to be a part of that.
Upon graduation from the University of Toledo, I have worked in two different school districts and in almost every grade level. In the Springfield district I was a teacher aid in both first and second grade where I assisted children with learning disabilities. I currently am working with the Bedford school district where I am a literacy coach and I teach students from K-6th grade to because better readers. I believe in empowering our students whenever possible. By this I mean allowing the students to be in charge and have control over their own learning by giving students options. I like working with students in small groups, where I mix their levels of ability thus allowing then to learn not only from me, but from each other as well!
I have been teaching for close to fifteen years now, and have had a great deal of experience in working with students from Kindergarten all the up to adult education. Many people have different teaching skills and techniques. I do not believe any technique to educate a child is better than any other technique. Each child learns differently. Understanding the fact that children learn differently is crucial. The teacher must be able to adapt to the child's learning style. I believe I have the ability to use an array of teaching styles to help children. I would enjoy the opportunity to help children learn.
As a student at the University of Detroit Mercy, I worked as a tutor for two years. I helped other students struggling in mathematics and biology classes. Also, my senior year in college I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a Microbiolgy lab. In addition, I did student teaching for a Catholic Middle School.

Florida Writes is an assessment of writing proficiency which incorporates the assessment of higher order skills, since students are required to generate and develop the ideas that form the basis for their written responses.
