A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer working with African American children. I believe they are usually the most neglected children in the public school systems. I try to work as a mentor and guide children through projects and activties, rather than work as their "guru". I believe all children are gifted they just need the direction and encouragement to steer them through their experiences. I use child centered approaches to teaching by using hands-on activities and project based lessons.
After graduating from DePauw University, my first teaching experience was at Rose Elementary Open School, which is a Detroit Public School. I was a building substitute. I believe in empowering our students whenever possible. By this I mean allowing the students to be in charge and have control over their own learning by giving students options. I like working with students in small groups, where I mix their levels of ability thus allowing then to learn not only from me, but from each other as well!
I have been teaching for close to fifteen years now, and have had a great deal of experience in working with students from Kindergarten all the up to adult education. A Little Bit About Me...

In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. I am also a substitute teacher for a day school. I am currently in graduate school at Eastern Michigan University where I am pursuing a credential in k-12, emotional impairment and learning disabilities.

I am working on my Bachelor degree through Baker college and need six more courses to complete that degree. As a student at the University of Detroit Mercy, I worked as a tutor for two years. I helped other students struggling in mathematics and biology classes. Also, my senior year in college I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a Microbiolgy lab. In addition, I did student teaching for a Catholic Middle School.
Many people have different teaching skills and techniques. I do not believe any technique to educate a child is better than any other technique. Each child learns differently. Understanding the fact that children learn differently is crucial. The teacher must be able to adapt to the child's learning style. Upon graduation from the University of Toledo, I have worked in two different school districts and in almost every grade level. In the Springfield district I was a teacher aid in both first and second grade where I assisted children with learning disabilities. I currently am working with the Bedford school district where I am a literacy coach and I teach students from K-6th grade to because better readers.
