I have served as a guidance counselor in middle schools for almost forty years and retired in December, 2013. During the last twelve years, I have tutored students in math in groups and individually. Math is one of my top subjects!

Most student difficulties come from a lack in understanding the basics in math. I try to find a starting point to build from there. Because of Covid-19 I now tutor ONLY on-line. I use FaceTime and along with a whiteboard, I create a classroom environment to provide the student total participation. And they all love it.

A Little Bit About Me...

My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting problem sets. There is so much interesting literature, philosophy, and history in the fields of science and physics that it makes very little sense to muddle with these less helpful and dull techniques and problems. Physics and math education has become so perforated with cliche that shows like Cosmos and the elegant universe can become hits by just regurgitating the same buzz-theories (Schrodinger's cat, Black holes, the multiverse etc.) in the same, cloddish language (space-time is 'warped' and twisted, quantum 'weirdness', etc). I find it partucularly useful to take time to get to know the student's interests so that I can relate each subject to things that the student is familiar with. Making this connection between a difficult concept and the student's personal areas of interest helps the student feel comfortable with the subject and therefore more confident thinking through each question presented. Once confidence is established, it becomes easier for students to develop an understanding of the subject area that can be applied without the tutor present.

I hope to tutor teenagers that i can teach and learn from

I can be strict but I do show empathy and try to put myself in other's situation. I don't judge I believe every child learns in thier own way but with time and patience it can be done. My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I like to make teaching fun! If a student is bored they aren't going to be putting 100% into their work. I also use a positive reward system and celebrate all achievement. Even if it is minor.

My comments on tutoring Math : Covering all arithmetic operations, working with positives and negatives, complex numbers, converting decimal to fractions and fractions to decimals, using matrices

I try to present each subject area as a sample problem and show EXACTLY how a solution is reached. Then I invite the student's participation with a view toward understanding the student's thinking. While accuracy in math is vital, understanding the steps involved is crucial.
