After earning my BA and PhD in English, I spent many years in industry as an engineer, quality manager, project manager, and technical writer. I have taught a wide range of subjects in college classrooms, from astronomy to information literacy and composition to professional writing. I am currently on the faculty at two colleges here in Maine and I serve as an editor for several academic and industry publications. I love to work with students one-on-one from topic selection to final editing. Making the right decisions early in the writing process is critical to the paper’s success, and I have many classroom-tested tools and techniques to help students make the right decisions. Everyone has their own way of learning. The key is to figure that way out and use it to their advantage. If the person is a slow learner, then a slower approach is necessary. If the person is a fast learner, then a faster approach is required. I did tutoring as a high school student. I tutored other students in math. The tutoring program also placed me in kindergarten and first grade classes to help the teacher where needed. I have two children that are always asking how to do things. When I teach writing, I emphasize -- and ensure that the students practice -- rewriting. Not even professional writers get it right the first time. I also encourage students to enrich their writing by reading as often as possible. Young people who take writing seriously are preparing for a successful college career. Post-secondary students who learn to write effectively are more employable than those who view writing as a technical obstacle. I think it is important to understand that everyone can learn, however it is just a matter of how long it takes. Kids learn at different paces. They may need to be shown a different way to learn. For example, I believe that children learn to read by understanding the book,through meaning. It's important to discuss what is happening in the book. I have a guided reading lesson plan that tells me exactly what I need to work on with that student. Is the student looking at the pictures to help him/her with a word? etc.. I am very patient and kind. I love working with kids and seeing their faces light up when they have achieved certain goals.
