I'm somewhat new to tutoring, but am currently helping 2 high school seniors prepare for the ACT and apply to college. I often help my younger relatives with their homework as well. Depending on the student I often start from scratch with analogies, diagrams, online tutorials, and simple practice on scratch paper. Usually students will get it after a few sessions, but there are many students that have to be tutored on a constant basis. I teach that effort is necessary for success. A positive attitude is good, but only if it is an afterthought of repetitive practice and focus. I would not tell a student "you can do it" if I knew they could not. Instead we would work together until they could do it. While at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh I worked as a tutor in Mathematics and Shop.
