I'm a strong believer in the Gardner's ideas of many different learning styles and types of intelligent. Some students are better audio, tactile, or visual learners. I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to find the best learning style for each student and build on that format through scaffolding. I love nothing better than to see the light bulb go off in a students mind. This also helps them to realize that learning can be a fun adventure. I've been a special education teacher and held positions in resource and in self-contained rooms. I've taught students with learning problems in reading, math, and writing. I have also worked in the Lights on for Learning program and have been a home tutor for home bound students in the district.

I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. Throughout those years I've encountered many special needs students and many bright students, tutoring in subjects ranging from English, Math, Social Studies, to Computer Science. I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process.

As a graduate student at the University of Maryland, I taught Russian 101 to undergraduate students for two semesters. I also taught Russian 101 at the University of Virginia for two semesters as a teacher’s assistant. I taught English as a Second Language through Black Hawk College for two semesters, and I taught infants and toddlers at Best Beginnings preschool and child care center for 2 years and 5 months. I have earned a bachelor's degree in Russian Language and Literature, a master's degree in Russian Linguistics, a second master's degree in Russian Language and Literature, a certificate in Arabic Language, and an associate's degree in Elementary Education. I enjoy working with students and co-workers on all levels, whether they have little or no experience. I know when to recognize different styles in learning and methods I can use to accomodate each different style. I am also very patient and willing to put extra effort in with students that might have trouble learning the material presented.
