I started writing as a journalist at a small daily newspaper. I became interested in broadcast journalism and spent three years writing commercials and promos for a television station. I moved to South Florida after that, and couldn't find a broadcasting job, so I took a position at a marketing company, where I learned to write marketing copy. Four years later, I had an epiphany that I wanted to work helping the poor, and I took a position writing direct mail fundraising materials for a non-profit. I have developed a unique way of working with authors. Together we rewrite and make corrections while the writers are reading their work aloud. It is remarkable how many errors the writer finds on his or her own. Once we have made preliminary corrections, we work on the actual structure of the piece. We discuss the stylistic differences among writing forms. Emails and business letters differ from creative writing and factual reporting. I have learned how to encourage the writer and help make corrections without being unduly aggressive. The relationship between the student and teacher must be one of mutual respect. Fear and intimidation do not belong in the mix. I have taught English in middle school. I have been the go to person in my family and among my friends when they have to write anything.
