I became interested in broadcast journalism and spent three years writing commercials and promos for a television station. I moved to South Florida after that, and couldn't find a broadcasting job, so I took a position at a marketing company, where I learned to write marketing copy. Four years later, I had an epiphany that I wanted to work helping the poor, and I took a position writing direct mail fundraising materials for a non-profit. About three years later I decided I wanted to help people in Afghanistan, and I accepted a position in the western city of Herat.
