My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have written articles for newspapers and magazines which have been received very well. Writing journalistically is different from writing other kinds of material, and the student must know the difference. I teach that.

I have been teaching many years, and I make sure I keep very much up to date with the teaching styles and ideas in use today, I have bona fide references available from students and their parents, (past and present) to show prospective students. I have worked with students for whom English is a second (or third or fourth) language). I have worked very successfully with students who have had a learning disability or physical or emotional or mental problem of some kind. I have developed a unique way of working with authors. Together we rewrite and make corrections while the writers are reading their work aloud. It is remarkable how many errors the writer finds on his or her own. Once we have made preliminary corrections, we work on the actual structure of the piece. We discuss the stylistic differences among writing forms. Emails and business letters differ from creative writing and factual reporting. I have learned how to encourage the writer and help make corrections without being unduly aggressive. The relationship between the student and teacher must be one of mutual respect.
