My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have written articles for newspapers and magazines which have been received very well. Writing journalistically is different from writing other kinds of material, and the student must know the difference. I teach that.

I am gentle, yet demanding. I am soft, but strict. I use humor to keep my students interested and in focus. I teach, but I also listen and watch for signals from my students in order to know if they understand or need more explanation. I develop a bond with my students regardless of the students'age which allows us, as a "team" to move together toward success. I understand that different people learn things in different ways, and so I try to accommodate that with my teaching. I have developed a unique way of working with authors. Together we rewrite and make corrections while the writers are reading their work aloud. It is remarkable how many errors the writer finds on his or her own. Once we have made preliminary corrections, we work on the actual structure of the piece. We discuss the stylistic differences among writing forms. Emails and business letters differ from creative writing and factual reporting. I have learned how to encourage the writer and help make corrections without being unduly aggressive. The relationship between the student and teacher must be one of mutual respect.
