I am a junior English major and Religious Studies minor at Rhodes College. I graduated from Harding Academy ('09), a school well known for its strong English department. I believe a hands on approach to teaching a subject is the best way for a child to succeed. I believe that flashcards as well as games help younger children succeed in mastering a subject. Making a subject fun is key to helping a child tackle a tough subject. For older kids, practice tests are very helpful as well as flashcards. Encouragement and support is also an important part of mastery. I have been a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school during their aftercare program. For math problems, I usually work problems and explain each step, and then have the student attempt to work a similiar one when they feel like they understand the problems. I try to be as helpful as possible while still focusing on the goal of total understanding for the student, as well as the ability to work a similiar problem independently with confidence. For paper writing, I would have the student brainstorm some ideas, and then together we could discuss the pro's and con's of the topic and organization choice, and provide tips on how we could better the assignment.
